More than 140 years of history

The origins of the Sagrada Familia date back to 1882, when a Catholic group commissioned Francisco de Paula del Villar to build a large neo-Gothic temple in the heart of Barcelona. However, due to disagreements with this architect, the project ended up in the hands of Antoni Gaudí, who despite his youth had already demonstrated his genius.

The style then adapted to his peculiar modernist style, with clear influences from his passion for nature. Although Gaudí only saw a small part of his grand work completed, as he died in 1926, his many successors remained faithful to his designs. Much remains to be done, but it is expected that construction will be completed in 2036.

Antoni Gaudí

Gaudí was born in Reus (Tarragona) in 1852. He studied architecture at the ETSAB in Barcelona. His first major work was Casa Vicens, inspired by Islamic architecture. Thanks to Joan Martorell, he took over the Sagrada Familia project, to which he dedicated 43 years. He also designed Park Güell, Casa Batlló, and La Pedrera. Gaudí died on June 10, 1926, in Barcelona.
