General Access Rules for the Sagrada Familia

Here’s a summary of the key points from the Regulations and Purchase Conditions established by the Sagrada Familia Construction Board. Along with the practical information for your visit and a ticket, this is almost everything you need to enjoy a tour of the temple. At the end of the page, you can consult the original rules document in PDF format.

First, to visit the Sagrada Familia, you need to have a ticket, which must be kept and shown to accredited staff if requested.
Upon entering the premises, you’ll go through a security check where your belongings may be inspected: bags, backpacks, luggage, professional photography and video equipment, and personal items. Keep in mind that for a visit to the Basilica with tower access, you’ll need to store backpacks or bags in a locker.

You cannot bring outside beverages or narcotic substances inside.
If a dangerous object is detected during the security check, it will be confiscated, and the police will be notified.

Lastly, if you’re traveling with a pet, note that animals are not allowed, with the sole exception of guide dogs.

Dress Code at the Sagrada Familia

As a religious site, the dress code rules for the Sagrada Familia are somewhat stricter than those at city museums or tourist attractions like Park Güell or La Pedrera. This is especially important to consider during Barcelona’s warmer months, adapting to the concept of decorum outlined in the rules.

The main dress restrictions include wearing transparent clothing, pants or skirts that don’t cover at least mid-thigh, or going in a swimsuit.

Attire related to celebrations of any kind is not permitted. For example, outfits for bachelor or bachelorette parties or ornaments designed to distract or draw attention for artistic, religious, or promotional purposes are prohibited.

You also cannot enter the Sagrada Familia barefoot; footwear is required.

Inside the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the rules specify that bare shoulders are not allowed.

Regarding attire, for security reasons, you must avoid wearing caps or hats, except for religious headwear or those worn for health reasons.

Behavioral Rules at the Sagrada Familia

Once past the security check, inside the premises, you should help maintain a respectful atmosphere appropriate for a church, so you’re encouraged to avoid raising your voice or shouting.
You’ll need to maintain civic behavior and avoid crowding or running from one side to another.

It may seem obvious, but smoking and eating are not allowed inside the Sagrada Familia premises.
